Irish Donkey Welfare Organisation
For hundreds of years, donkeys have been an integral part of rural life. The saying, Beast of Burden, is very apt as they have been used for almost every job requiring extra “horse power” prior to the introduction of tractors. Donkeys were easy and cheap to keep, their strength and ability to travel over unsteady rough ground made them preferential to horses, and they were used as a form of transport.
From the time IDWO was formed, we've been collecting photos depicting their working life. These are used for educational purposes for school presentations and event displays.
